How to Repair a Dead Car Key

It's a real pain when keys to your car break, and it happens at the most uncomfortable times! There are a few ways you can repair the broken car key that don't involve paying for a new one.

Dead Key Fob Batteries

Modern key fobs let us to open trunks, doors and tailgates without having fumble around to find a physical key. Some key fobs even come with a built-in key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these devices are dependent on a small battery that provides power to their remote functions. If the battery fails, then the key fob cannot transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. Luckily, there are several ways you can repair the problem and get your car running again.

First, determine the condition of the key fob to determine if it's really dead. If it appears to be dead, you will have to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by removing the key fob from its clip or using a small flat-head screwdriver to remove it. Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you may end up damaging the fob. Also, make sure that you're using the right type of battery. The majority of key fobs utilize three-volt CR2032 batteries, however certain models might require a different type of battery. Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the little key ring on the top, which is where it connects to the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the surface to make it stronger. However, I'm sure that's not helping.



I've also tried wrapping the broken part of ring with clear tape but it didn't look much better. It's a shame because I use the tiny split ring to keep my keys in place.
